Sam and I went out alone together for the first time tonight, to watch my friend Ralph’s recital at the Summer Workshop of Repertory Philippines. They put on the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls, and Ralph played Brother Arvide Abernathy, a missionary from the Save-A-Soul Mission and grandfather to Sarah Brown. And he sang this song to her:

More I Cannot Wish You

Velvet I can wish you
For the collar of your coat
And fortune smiling all along your way
But More I Cannot Wish You
Than to wish you find your love
Your own true love this day

Mansions I can wish you
Seven footmen all in red
And calling cards upon a silver tray.
But More I Cannot Wish You
Than to wish you find your love
Your own true love this day

Standing there
Gazing at you
Full of the bloom of youth

Standing there
Gazing at you
With a sheeps’ eye
And a lickerish tooth.

Music I can wish you
Merry music while you’re young
And wisdom when your hair has turned to gray.
But More I Cannot Wish You
Than to wish you find your love
Your own true love this day
With a sheeps’ eye
And a lickerish tooth
And a strong arms
To carry you away.

I was too engrossed in the production to have taken pictures, but here are some from the curtain call. Ralph (who I met in person for the first time tonight) is the skinny little thing in brown.

There are no photos of him and me together, we were too busy hugging each other. And Sam and I couldn’t stay because we left the kids at home and it was getting late. Ralph had his friends from Ballet Manila in the audience as well, so we knew the night was far from over for him. While we were talking he showed me his left knee, which had a scratch because he had a small accident moving the props. We hugged again and promised to text and set appointments for another, less hurried meeting.

To my friend Ralph, you were great! And we know you’ll be even better.
