How long will it last?
Right after the proposal comes the engagement rings, and then the setting of the date, and the planning and the preparation for the big day.
But in these times when getting out of marriage is almost as easy (and certainly as expensive) than getting in, one wonders, after witnessing one wedding after another, from the simple civil ceremony to the ornate and ostentatious church wedding and the 1000 guests in the reception: How long will it last?
My observation these days is if someone, male or female, does not tie the knot by age 27 there’s a huge possibility that he or she will not get to tie the knot at all. There is a premium on independence and freedom these days. Independence from a relationship that may have more strings than a DMC outlet, freedom from the whims and opinions of a partner who may not really be good for one’s health. There is also the expense involved in getting hitched, whether it be for the acquisition of legal papers or for the fees and obligations involved in a religious ceremony.
Either way, people these days seem to be getting married a lot later than they used to a generation ago.
Must be something in the water.
What is mesothelioma?
Quite a number of people who develop mesothelioma have worked in locations where they inhaled asbestos dust, or they have been exposed to asbestos particles and fiber by other means. Regularly washing the clothes of someone who worked with asbestos can also put one at risk for developing mesothelioma.
According to Asbestos.com,
approximately 2,000 to 3,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year in the United States, comprising around 3 percent of all cancer diagnoses. This cancer occurs more frequently in men than in women, about four times more frequent. All forms of mesothelioma, except for benign mesothelioma, are invariably fatal. The prognosis for mesothelioma is almost always poor and most studies report a median survival of less than one year, but the prognosis really depends on how early it is diagnosed and aggressively it is treated.
Mesothelioma treatments can be divided into two main categories: curative treatments and palliative treatments. Curative treatments are those carried out in an attempt to remove all cancer cells and cure the disease. Palliative treatments are designed to ease pain and make a patient more comfortable.
Imaginet at the AFMA
Abi Dinsay and Michelle de la Cruz represented Imaginet International Inc. during the recently concluded 8th Asia Pacific Mining Conference and Exhibition held at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila.
The Exhibit featured some of the top mining companies currently operating in the Philippines today, their respective booths highlighting the new technology and equipment now in use in the various mining sites across the country. Other exhibitors were the manufacturers and distributors of these equipment, and Imaginet, the only company in the Philippines to offer computer and security systems integration for mining operations.
Our sales team Abi and Michelle distributed brochures and promotional items for Imaginet and suppliers Chitttick and Expressalarms. Chittick provides fire prevention and suppression equipment while Expressalarms distribute high tech security and monitoring equipment.
No speed limit
It is unfortunate that while the furor from the MMDA Chairman’s insistence of the absence of a speed limit on EDSA had hardly abated, the tragedy that befell Dr. Francisco Sarabia has punctuated Bayani Fernando’s statement with a fiery exclamation point.
But while bus drivers who think they’re in the Indianapolis 500 can be blamed on the MMDA Chairman’s reckless statement, made during the budget hearings in Congress last month, it cannot be denied that there are drivers who have been speeding and swerving on EDSA and other avenues of the city way for a long time now.
I have blogged about why I do not patronize the Jayross Lucky 7 bus lines, which is because of their drivers who do not seem to give a hoot about their passengers safety. There are other buses lately that seem to have acquired the same arrogance that the Jayross bus drivers have. Drivers who seem to think they’re driving Maserati’s instead of King-Long’s.
And as a commuter hanging on for dear life, you really cannot do much except hang on for dear life. Make a comment that the driver can hear and he will tell you that we’re all just trying to make a living, or if you don’t fancy his driving style you can just get off, or some such rejoinder. You can only wish that he will slow down the vehicle long enough at your stop for you to get off shaken but in one piece.
And so after the Sarabia tragedy, MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando now says there is a Study on Edsa speed limit now underway. Angelito Vergel de Dios, MMDA Traffic Operations Executive Director, says the Organized Bus Route System is well under way.
Must there always be a tragedy before measures are taken to ensure safety? Apparently in this society, the answer is yes.
