A top advertising agency is using “crowdsourcing” to get photographers to give up their photos for free, and with little assurance of acknowledgement. At first they said it was for a phone app, but now there’s also an ad to be shown on CNN no less, but they want photographers to “donate” photos.
Now, you may ask, why am I bringing this up when I had several times organized shoots that required photographers to allow the beneficiary organizations to use their photos at no cost? The PNR, the (defunct) Pasig River Ferry, the City of Biñan, the Nayong Pilipino?
The answer is simple: I did not make any money out of those endeavors. The beneficiaries needed the pictures but did not have the budget to get them. To return the favor of letting us shoot on their grounds, we allowed them to use a few of our pictures.
The top advertising agency, however, has been hired by a government office to the tune of 5.6 Million pesos. You make 5.6 Million and then you ask photographers to give you their pics for free?
What is wrong with THAT picture?
