Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon on Toshiba Satellite Pro M10
As of 26 December I have officially upgraded to the latest Ubuntu, Gutsy Gibbon. The short story is, if you have an NVidia graphics card, you MUST install Alberto Milone’s Envy for your machine to work as it should.
The rest of the story later . . .
The write-up below is from my Feisty Fawn installation.
I have spent about a month’s worth of weekends and holidays trying to make Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 work on a Toshiba Satellite Pro M10. This page contains the results of my work and research so far, what works and what doesn’t. I will update this page as I discover more things about running Feisty on this particular Toshiba laptop, in the hope of one day helping out someone who may want to do the same, and save him some of the tears and sweat that I shed, more often than not because of mere near-sightedness.
I wrote about why I switched to Ubuntu despite having a Windows XP Pro license here.
Here is a link to the page I created on the Laptop Testing section on the Ubuntu Wiki.
And here is a link to Ubuntu related posts on this blog.
My Toshiba’s details:
Machine: Toshiba Satellite Pro M10
RAM: 256mb
HD: 40gb
Graphics adaptor: NVIDIA GeForce4â„¢ 420 Go
Video memory : 32MB
Built-in WiFi, SD Card Reader, 2 USB Ports, CD-RW/DVD Drive, IrDA port
*Disabled onboard keyboard (pulled out connector) as forward slash/? key was sticking. External A4Tech keyboard plugged in via USB port keyboard/mouse adaptor.
Logitech Optical Mouse
Linux Distro: Ubuntu v7. 04 Feisty Fawn
Location: Manila, Philippines
Date of Installation: April - May 2007
Installation notes:
Installation was done with an Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn Live CD. I made a few mis-steps with earlier installs, where the iso files I had downloaded were corrupted, or had become corrupted on my Windows desktop. But once I had the Feisty Fawn Live CD running, installation went without a hitch. Wired networking was detected instantly, and additional packages were downloaded with no problems.
What worked right out of the box:
Sound is excellent
WiFi and wired connections
Local Networking / File Sharing
What worked immediately when I plugged them in:
USB Flashdrive auto mounts
Kodak EasyShare CX7330 Digital Camera
Other software installed:
Automatix2
Envy - which took care of the Nvidia driver installation problems
Beryl Manager
Skype (need to add the debian skype repository in synaptic manager)
Network-manager
Gaim 2.0.0beta6
Thunderbird 2.0
Firestarter
Gnome Partition Editor
Kaffeine Audio/Video Player
Amarok
KTorrent
GFTP
Firefox 2.0.0.3
IEs4Linux (for cross-browser checking of the websites I design)
What needed a bit of work:
DVDs play with Kaffeine (although it won’t play VCDs) - a known bug
Printing to the networked HP Laserjet 1010 on an Edimax Print Server, accomplished via CUPS server, with printer configured as Unix LPD
Connecting to our office network via VPN - an excellent post here solved my configuration problem
Minor Annoyances:
Need to press the Windows key together with the cursor keys on the A4Tech keyboard so they will work like cursor keys, as well as the Del, Home, PgUp, PgDn and End keys.
Annoyance(s) which I haven’t found explanations for:
Laptop does not “Restart” successfuly. I have to shut down and boot up again.
What I haven’t found a way to make them work:
SD Card reader
Infrared port
