The accidental geek redux

I’ve lost track on how many times I’ve tried to make something out of our Top Level Domain kusangpalo.com. Once it had been a Joomla site offering services for something that Sam and I do as a homegrown business. We offered services for domain name registration and web design and hosting, including creating presentations burnt on mini-cd’s which can be given away as promotional products. Then it became a Joomla tips site and then it became just a jump-off point for either Sam’s or my blog.

Do I.T. Yourself

I don’t remember if it ever got PR in its previous incarnations, and I wasn’t that keen on it then. But now I figured since it was there I might as well put it to good use.

There’s stuff I do at work that I can’t talk about because of NDA’s and such, but I’ve always felt that life as an IT worker leans more on the interesting side. That’s what I plan to accomplish with Do I.T. Yourself, show the perky side of I.T. life from the point of view of an accidental geek.

Add an RSS Feed on your WordPress Sidebar

Convenience is one of the general features of the new WordPress 2.+ versions. Adding stuff to your sidebar has never been easier. Add-ons that had been handled by external plugins in the earlier versions of WordPress are now built-in. They can also be added into your sidebar through drag and drop.

One of these built-in drag and drop features is the RSS feed widget. I’ve just added it myself on the second sidebar, which now features an RSS feed of my Top 10 EntreCard Droppers.

If your WordPress installation is at version 2 and up, you should be able to see the RSS widget when you click on Design > Widgets on your WordPress administration screen.

RSS Widget

Once you’ve added it to the sidebar of your choice, you can then edit the widget to show the RSS feed that you would like to appear on your sidebar, in my case it looks like this:

RSS Feed Setup

When you’ve entered the necessary data, click on “Change” and then “Save Changes”. When you go to the front end (homepage) of your site, you should be able to see something similar to what I have under the Communities Badges on this site.

You can have more than one RSS feed on your sidebar, just keep dragging that RSS widget into the spot where you want them to appear and presto!

. . . in 15 easy steps.

Just to make sure no one thinks I’m promising this will work with ANY WordPress installation, please read the next couple of paragraphs at least twice. This customization technique will work only and ONLY IF:

1. You have a WordPress installation on a “paid” hosting service on a Apache/Unix Server. This means this will not work on a free WordPress hosting service that does NOT allow you to FTP files into the root directory of your WordPress installation. (Never mind the techie terminology, these will all be explained in the succeeding steps.)

AND

2. You know how to use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to upload files into your WordPress root directory, and how to use your FTP program to change permissions (CHMOD) on a file.
